You know, I liked Jon Stewart before. But now? Jon Stewart is a demigod in my eyes. Because he pointed something out to me that I never noticed before then, and I may never have noticed, and I may have just lived my life not noticing--the media is just so...part of the plan. It's hard to explain what he means, which is why I've spent the better part of a week trying to understand what he said on Crossfire and what he said on this one thing I was watching on C-SPAN (yes, I was watching C-SPAN, but it was my first time and I just HAPPENED to be thinking about a bit from The Daily Show when I turned it on and saw Jon Stewart), and I feel like I get it, but I don't know how to explain it. Partisan hackery he called it, but that makes it sound like he's accusing it of bias. He's not, and he said so on that C-SPAN thing. The only way I could explain it is how he explained it, and since I don't remember his exact words it's so difficult. He spent at least fifteen minutes enduring questioning about the issue and all the time I was striving to understand it but not quite seeing what he meant until I just kind of frowned and went over it a little and it made a whole lot more sense. It's kind of like what Douglas Adams was saying about atheism in The Salmon of Doubt--that's what I feel about this. It took me a lot of time and a lot of consideration, but now that I feel like I understand it I feel like I ought to do something about it. The closest to an explanation I can get is he said the media is not so dedicated to telling the truth anymore as it is to exclusivity. They don't nail people with the questions worth asking because then these people won't come back on their show. That's not even it, see, I just can't express this. I can, however, explain how this makes me feel so strongly about Jon Stewart. In understanding this, I mentioned it earlier as equivalent to understanding Douglas Adams on atheism. It was very difficult for me to understand, but once I did, it just made more sense than anything else. It's like reaching a higher level logically. It's pretty neat.
